What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a type of aesthetic surgery aimed at reshaping the tip of the nose, which may vary due to various factors. People who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their nose tip often consider undergoing rhinoplasty to achieve a new look.

Rhinoplasty can be performed using either the closed or open technique. In the closed technique, adjustments are made through the nostrils, so no visible scars are left after surgery. In contrast, the open technique involves making an incision through the middle of the nostrils, which may leave a slight scar. However, the open technique provides the surgeon with a better view and more working space as the nasal framework is exposed. Each technique has its differences, so careful attention is required during the surgery.

Rhinoplasty aims to correct issues such as a drooping nose tip, an excessively pointed tip, or asymmetry that does not suit the face. If patients have additional concerns, they should discuss them with the surgeon beforehand to ensure these issues are considered during planning.

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia, and patients stay in the hospital under doctor supervision on the first night, with discharge the following day. The time it takes for a patient to return to social life depends on their condition, as bed rest and avoiding physical exertion are necessary for the first week. The procedure, recommended for individuals over 18, typically lasts around 1.5 to 2 hours. The surgeon’s experience and clear communication with the patient are crucial for understanding expectations and enhancing the success of the surgery.

Another factor that can improve the success of the surgery is taking pre-operative photos from various angles and creating a 3D design to achieve the desired shape. In an ideal nose structure, the angle between the lip and the nose tip should be perpendicular, and these photos help calculate this angle to plan the surgery accordingly.

After rhinoplasty, patients must follow several important guidelines. Primarily, they should rest in bed for a month after the surgery to reduce swelling and shorten the recovery period. During recovery, the surgeon may apply bands, splints, or silicone, and these should not be removed without medical supervision. Patients can return to social activities after a week if they feel well. They should avoid swimming pools, the sea, saunas, and direct sun exposure for the first month. To ease the recovery process, patients should strictly follow the surgeon’s instructions. It is also essential to understand that skin thickness and nose skin structure impact the healing process, and patients should not compare their recovery with others, as each individual’s experience is unique.

What is the Process Before Rhinoplasty?

  • First, the patient and the rhinoplasty surgeon have a preliminary consultation before the surgery. During this consultation, the patient should discuss the problems they have with their nose and their expectations for the surgery with the doctor
  • During the consultation, photographs of the patient are taken from various angles, and a 3D design is created to outline the desired post-surgery appearance.
  • Information about the patient’s allergies, previous surgeries, chronic illnesses, and regular medications is gathered to determine if there are any contraindications for the rhinoplasty.
  • The technique of the rhinoplasty and the type of anesthesia to be used are decided during this consultation.
  • The rhinoplasty surgeon provides detailed information about the behaviors and precautions the patient needs to follow before and after the surgery
