Endoscopic Sinus Surgery in Turkey

Endoscopic sinus surgery is the gold standard in the treatment of sinus cases resistant to medical treatment. Endoscopic sinus surgery focuses on treating the underlying cause of the problem. The main difference from traditional sinus surgery is that it uses an endoscope. An endoscope is a long, thin, flexible tube inserted into the nasal and sinus cavities. It contains a small camera that allows the surgeon to view the nasal passages and use small, specialized surgical instruments. It usually eliminates the need for external incisions. The nasal cavity and sinuses can be better visualizes by using detailed x-ray techniques through the endoscope. If necessary, diseased or obstructive tissue can remove with the help of an endoscope.

For which diseases is endoscopic sinus surgery used?

Chronic sinusitis is the most common use. Apart from chronic sinusitis, it is also used in the following surgeries with increasing rates:

  • Repair of the deviated septum (septoplasty)
  • Removal of nasal polyps
  • Reduction of turbinates lining the nasal passages
  • Orbital decompression (around one or both eyes)
  • Tear duct surgery.
  • Repair of cerebrospinal fluid leaks
  • Surgery of sinus, pituitary gland, and brain base tumors

How is endoscopic sinus surgery performed?

During endoscopic sinus surgery, a thin tube called an endoscope insert through the patient’s nostrils. The natural drainage pathway of the sinuses visualizes with the small camera of the endoscope. Then the sinus tracts are widened by removing tissue or polyps and opening the sinuses. The surgery generally takes between two and three hours. It can perform under local or general anesthesia.

In some cases, a small device called a stent is placed in one of the sinuses. The stent releases steroids that inhibit inflammation after surgery. The stent effect lasts for about a month. It usually resolves on its own without the need for removal.

In some cases, doctors can perform outpatient sinus treatment in the office using The Balloon Sinoplasty method under local anesthesia. The Balloon Synoplasty method provides relief without the need for surgery in appropriate cases.

What is the recovery process like after endoscopic sinus surgery?

There may be some bloody nasal discharge for up to two weeks after the surgery. It will gradually correct itself. Good post-operative care is essential for the success of the surgery. Post-operative care includes taking prescribed antibiotics and pain relievers, avoiding any strenuous activity for a week, and keeping the nasal passages moist. Patients should not blow their noses for at least four to seven days after endoscopic sinus surgery.

Does chronic sinusitis or polyp recur after surgery?

It should be known that drug therapy should be continued after surgery, especially if allergies or polyps play a role in sinus disease. Medical drug therapy is necessary to prevent the recurrence of the disease. In general, sinusitis does not recur in the vast majority of patients with a combination of surgery and ongoing medical treatment. However, if there is an upper respiratory tract infection or allergy symptoms, it is necessary to take preventive measures by consulting a physician without delay.
